009 The Cord

The Cord

Leanne O’Sullivan

I used to lie on the floor for hours after
school with the phone cradled between
my shoulder and my ear, a plate of cold
rice to my left, my school books to my right.
Twirling the cord between my fingers
I spoke to friends who recognized the
language of our realm. Throats and lungs
swollen, we talked into the heart of the night,
toying with the idea of hair dye and suicide,
about the boys who didn’t love us,
who we loved too much, the pang
of the nights. Each sentence was
new territory, like a door someone was
rushing into, the glass shattering
with delirium, with knowledge and fear.
My Mother never complained about the phone bill,
what it cost for her daughter to disappear
behind a door, watching the cord
stretching its muscle away from her.
Perhaps she thought it was the only way
she could reach me, sending me away
to speak in the underworld.
As long as I was speaking
she could put my ear to the tenuous earth
and allow me to listen, to decipher.
And these were the elements of my Mother,
the earthed wire, the burning cable,
as if she flowed into the room with
me to somehow say, Stay where I can reach you,
the dim room, the dark earth. Speak of this
and when you feel removed from it
I will pull the cord and take you
back towards me.

The controlling idea of The Cord is trying to tell about a mainly a high school life of a teenage girl going through her experiences of teenage years and school.  O' Sullivan describes the girls life as a normal teenage life going through the ups and downs and obstacles that she may face. The author uses metaphors a comparison of two unlikely things utilizing the words like or as. " Each sentence was new territory, like a door someone was rushing into, the glass shattering with delirium, with knowledge and fear." The person described in the poem seems to be going through a heart break or a lost relationship and is describing her feelings as a cord that she wants to take and bring back into her life.

Love poem 137

Last night just me and you
never have I felt something more true
showing me how to fall in love with you

I guess it starts with your smile
it makes me want to stay a while
I can tell you I've been waiting for
someone like you to come along

You sweep me off my feet
make my heart skip two beats
and take my absolute breath away

Last night just me and you
never have I felt something more true
showing me how to fall in love with you

Microfiction

He didn't look anything like she expected. I thought as I walked into the restaurant of my friends’ choice. Speeding backward 2 weeks I’ll fill you in on my unfortunate back break of a life. Coming out of high school I had thought I had the world at my feet and everything was falling right into place. I had a great scholar ship to Boston University for lacrosse, my grades were just at a 95 average and I had my 5 closest friends with me by my side for most of my school life as I remember. Most importantly to me though was the guy I met my freshmen year of high school, Aaron Samuels. As I saw it I thought I had met my soul mate at the age 15 and nothing was going to change that. I and he were attached at the hip best friends next to falling in love with each other. Racing through the four years of high school came the day I never planned out in my future, losing him. He got the letter in the mail of acceptance of a California Collage way across the country and that of coarse meant a great long distance between us, me and Aaron had never been more than a weekend apart from each other now we were planning out thousands of miles. We decided that starting new lives without each other would be out of the best choice and we would soon move on and think of us as a great memory. As telling you before I had 5 very close best friends, where my story begins is with my friend Jillian. I and Jillian one night of watching our sappy love movies brain stormed a great idea; she was going to set me up on a blind date with her boyfriend’s friend Matt. Knowing Jillian she has always dated the crazy kind of guy and her boyfriend was sure one of the out there type of guys. Not knowing if I should really go through with the plan I finally gave in after all the pleading she began to do and I braced myself for the long night I had in front of me for Saturday night. I agreed to meet him at 8 and we would meet up at a popular hangout restaurant everyone went to in our town. I walked in and saw this overly obese guy sitting at a table set for two. Praying in my head this wasn’t the Matt I was sent to know. Springing up from the table he waddled to greet me and my stomach sank to the floor. He had a grease stain on his shirt with a matching face to go along with it. He guided us over to the table and we began to talk, I swear he went on about trains for an hour while slobbering on wings. I almost gagged watching this and the clock. I finally got the nerve to ask him to wipe his chin and he burped in my face. Thinking this was my breaking point I sprang out of the seat and darted for the door, never will I forget the worst disaster date of my life.

(that was honestly the closest I could find to poetry about Chile doctors performing surgery on conjoined twins.. I couldn't fine anything on hope or strength either)

"Inside, an army of experts was ready to try yet again to separate the conjoined twins, this time at the thorax, stomach and pelvic regions. It would be the seventh operation that the girls would undergo in their 10 months alive." My article that I found was as you can tell a Chilean doctor performing surgery on two girls that were born conjoined. "A miracle from God is what I'm waiting for." spoken from  Jessica Navarrete the mother of the two girls as they go into the operating room. Jessica was really scared for both her girls and was trying to keep strong for them both to have a safe surgery. During the surgery the girls had lost a lot of blood and the doctor asked their father "Roberto Paredes, to issue a call for the public to help out by donating blood." Finally after 10 hours of long surgery the girls "were split at the heart and liver areas". Reading on in the article I guess only one of the twins if the operation goes as planned can keep their original rectum from when they were born. Gross, but studies showed "one out of every 200,000 live births worldwide results in conjoined twins. About 35 percent survive only one day, while the overall survival rate is 5 percent to 25 percent." However it was hard with these set of twins because they shared internal organs and that is really hard to separate. The doctor stated "Never have we faced such a high risk," Ossandon said. "We don't have another option from the perspective of the quality of life and the expectations for life of Maria Jose and Maria Paz." The twins are now currently at the Villlarrica hospital and they are breathing on a ventilator using artificial air.

Leafy Salad

Leave piles tower over my bowl
green overload is surrounding the edges
a salad to eat is better than the meat

Each bite with a crisp sensation
the picture is such a beautiful creation
peppers and feta sprinkles the top
onions and carrots go chop,chop,chop

Dressing pools at the bottom of the bowl
I just ate that salad whole

http://www.timesunion.com/living/article/A-nurse-with-many-hats-2252295.php#page-2

"Carrie Cotto, who serves as school nurse at Geraldine W. Johnson School in Bridgeport," = Setting, the time and place in which the action of literary work occurs

"I treat every child here as if they were my own," = Mood/Tone , I feel it puts a really good warming welcoming mood across the whole piece when she adds that line in the article. It makes me feel like she really enjoys her job as being a nurse and takes pride in what she does.

"It's very important to make sure that I have covered all the bases with the kids," said Cotto on a recent morning. She said every visit requires asking the right questions, making the proper assessment, determining potential follow-up and educating students on ways to protect their health in the future. = Foreshadowing because it describes what the article is going to be about and just gives a brief introduction on what later on comes out of the story

"A nurse with many hats" is an article about a nurse who switched over from being a nurse at a middle school to being a school supervisor. She explains how she enjoys her job as being a nurse and her passion for her job with working with the children and teaching them the right ways to become a more healthier community for school. She describes how much the technology and the program has changed so much since the date that she started back in.  The nurses describe their job as "Every day is a wonder around here" but they concluded that they feel complete that they gave so many children the oppritunity to learn about safe ways to keep healthy and clean lifestyle. The nurses play a huge role in the school and they think of the children "as one of their own" and feel so much at home when they give them hugs of comfort.

http://www.timesunion.com/default/article/Boy-pleads-guilty-in-NYC-shopping-cart-shove-case-2276699.php

After reading the editorial on the shopping cart accident I was completely in shock that a 12 year-old boy would actually perform this horrible act! The worst part about the whole thing is he stated  "I knew people was down there and somebody could have got hurt," at 12 years old don't you think you would develop some common sense? An editorial in Georgia wrote a reflection on what she thinks to have been a inappropriate act too "When 12-year-olds are dropping heavy objects on innocent passersby for sport . . . at least one of society's wheels is completely off the rails,". The housing that the boy stays at claims that he has "leadership potential" but I feel that is no reason why he should be released from any consequence he could of honestly killed the lady just because he wasn't thinking straight and wanted to be humorous... I agree with the court with putting him on punishment for up to 18 months for what he did. I don't think some of the people fully understand how serious the situation could of happened and the boy is very fortunate that the lady didn't die from his stupidity.

Opinion prompt # 13

Opinion Prompt 13. We should replace number grades with letter grades

In my opinion I think that changing the number grades into letter grades is a horrible idea. In middle school we basically did that and I hated the whole idea of it. It really confused me in a way because you never knew your exact grade and it was just a solid letter. With letter grades there is so much more you have to understand about them also like what each one means like for example A-  which is around the 90 to 95 range and A+ is 95 through 100 range and it follows down all the way to a F or in Guilderland they would most likely use an U for failing. It would save so much extra time just giving us the percentage grade and give the students an exact placement for where they know their grades are. Letter grades are completely old school and un necessary to an academic grading system.

I want a write about # 96

Through out my whole life I feel I have been taught many lessons and have been given a lot of valuable advice but one that really has the a lot of meaning to me is "Life isn't always fair, but it's still good". Going back on the piece advice I have heard it many times come out of peoples mouths but never really thought about how true it comes to play in life. There has been times where I didn't make the sports team or I thought I deserved something over other people and not given an oppritunity because someone else took it. Those are only some of the few examples that surround that quote, life isn't always going to be exactly as you planned it out to be. Yeah, you could say it's not fair but it's not something that would make me hate it. Life is a really valuable gift that you only get one of so why waste it downing yourself on something that could of been while you can be working hard for another goal that is coming your way to reach. Discovering something new everyday I see that life is full of ups and downs but at the end of the day life is still good.

Love will find a way

When I saw how many proverbs there was to chose from I couldn't help but see if there was any ones about love. I feel at this age it's one of the easier topics to talk/write about. In high school many people will go through multiple relationships through out the years and some make it all the way through and some break off for the better. I remember at a time in my life around last year when I was dating this guy for around 5 and half months and we had recently gotten to the point where you know the relationship is falling apart and you can't do anything to save it. I remember how heart broken I was because I didn't want to let go of the relationship because we were like best friends. My mom had saw how torn I had gotten over the period of time and sat me down and we began to have a long talk. She explained to me how he was just a stepping stone to the person who is waiting for me in the long run in the future and these things will happen in life. Not everything turns out the way we planned it and nothing lasts forever, I was only 14. As we were talking I explained my reasoning on how we should try to turn it around and I remember her saying if it's meant to be "Love will find a way" Gab. After she had said those words to me it really moved me and had me thinking on a while new outlook on it. Simple proverbs like the one that was said to me can really change the way you see and look at life situations you're in and could really help you out.

Post Halloween

I took off my Halloween costume, washed the paint off my face, put on my pajamas, brushed my teeth, and went to bed. I was almost asleep when I first heard the sound of the scratching underneath my bed. My heart felt like it was travelling up towards my chest with my pulse pounding in my ears. I quietly slip underneath the covers for protection when I hear the "scratch scratch scratch" and tapping on the wooden floor boards beneath me. I didn't know what to make of the whole situation? I thought all this bed time monster myths ended when I was in 3rd grade and what it seems to be is the worst of anyone's night mares were coming to reality for me. I couldn't build up the courage to look down underneath to see what was really going on so I thought if I made noise it would surely show itself too me. I continued on with my new plan until I heard a faint whisper "Get out of my house!" . I froze there with fear and chills creeping through my body, Do I scream for help or do I listen to what this thing is trying to tell me to do? I go with my best instinct and jet off my bed, right before I hit the floor a hand shoots out from underneath and grabs my ankle. I scream bloody murder and try to reach for my door handle, I hear a burst of laughing and the light switch flown on to reveal who the mysterious thing was. My older brothers Steven and Tony come crawling out of my bed laughing hysterically from the prank they pulled. At that moment I wanted to dis own them because for a week straight they continued on how it was the greatest Halloween prank pulled yet but looking back on it now it sure was a great was to end a Halloween night.

This article is about 2 AIDS and HIV physicians brothers were arrested just about 3 years ago for being charged with "plotting to overthrow the government after an unorthodox one-day secret army trial". The words and phrases that this article uses are mostly involving government and criminal justice terms. In the article it states that "The brothers were not allowed to interact with each while they were confined in separate wings of Tehran's Evin prison, including months each spent in solitary confinement". After getting released after a year in prison the brothers were relieved to be out of there. Even a deputy Director from PHP states that  "Doctors and other health professionals all over the world often face persecution for simply doing their job, and PHR has a long history of advocating on behalf of these doctors for justice and accountability".

Web. 23 Oct. 2011. <http://www.amazon.com/You-Give-Mouse-Cookie-Give/dp/0060245867>.

When ever I think of this book I think of sleepover's at my Aunt Nancy's house. Me and my cousin Sam were really close when we were little kids and always used to have these great sleepovers together. As I remember it right before we went to bed every time my Aunt Nancy would always used to tuck us in and read a few stories to us that were our choice. Me and my cousin would always make her read "If you give mouse a cookie" first every single time. We would talk about what would happen if the mouse appeared in our house and what we would give him. In the book the little boy that lives in the house gives a mouse a cookie, simply after eating the cookie the mouse keeps getting distracted and starts these little projects and doesn't finish them. If you have noticed in the story both the characters never really speak in dialog but they show pictures of what they are doing. In the end the mouse asks for one last cookie and the little boy falls asleep at his little desk. This author also writes little sequels to the book like "If you take a mouse to school", "If you give a cat a  cupcake" ect. I loved so many of the books on the list but once I saw this book it immediately grabbed my attention and I had to chose it.

N = Napa Valley Collage

I would want to attend this collage based on...

Information from: http://www.napavalley.edu/Pages/default.aspx

1. It's wide range of Career path choices: "The Career Counselor can assist you with finding your career direction, developing an action plan, mapping out an educational plan" I feel they would really lead me into the right direction on what I want to become and what classes I should choose for it.

2.Location: I have always wanted to explore the world after I got out of collage and this would be a really good experience to see the other side of the country.  "Napa Valley College’s tree-lined campus sits on a 160-acre site overlooking the Napa River in the heart of the world famous Napa Valley wine producing region.  The campus is also home to the Napa Valley Vintners' Teaching Winery. "

3. Promises success for the students: "Napa Valley College engages its students in high quality programs and services that promote learning and personal growth; enhance academic success and workforce development; and prepare life-long learners for their roles in a diverse, dynamic, and interdependent world."
"Dedicated to educational excellence and student success since opening in 1942, Napa Valley College has a rich tradition of educating generations of Napa Valley residents.  In addition, our state-of-the-art facilities attract students from a wide geographic area who want to take advantage of programs not offered elsewhere in the region."

4. Size of Campus: "The Upper Valley Campus of Napa Valley College is a 6.9 acre campus with 17,800 square foot buildings with classrooms for computer labs, business, fine arts, science labs, library resources, an instructional learning lab, a culinary arts center and a Native American Dedication Garden."

5. Provides student services:Our services are designed to help you succeed in your academic endeavors.  Taking advantage of the many resources available at the college can help you become a better student and speed your progress towards achieving your educational goals. It’s the smart thing to do.

I would be hesitant because of...

1. Distance from home: 6 hours away from my home in New york

2. Career Choice:  It doesn't have a good nursing or medical program involved in the collage

3. Cost:  Classes are charged "$ 36.00per unit"

Vintage Photo

 Tremosine, Garda, Lake of, Italy

When I got to chose the vintage photographs there was so many I could chose from, I saw that there was so many cultures and different topics but I automatically thought I could relate to the photo's that was my own culture the most. This picture I feel means more than just a 1000 words to me because it's not only where I mainly originated from but where on of my two favorite people came from, my grandparents. The beauty in this picture alone couldn't just use a 1000 words because it has so much more meaning to that. You can't describe all the words that gather up in your head all at once to make out what you're really trying to make out of the picture. This picture show's the original setting of Italy that I feel no one really thinks about it looking like. My grandparents have always told me that Italy was earth's like heaven and it always stuck with me that it was some perfect little world. Seeing this picture brought over a 1000 words to my mind along with memories and that's how a picture means over a 1000 words to me.

"The most important things are the hardest things to say." - The Body by Stephen King

The most important things are the hardest things to say. This quote really caught my attention because I feel it relates to real life more than anything else. As I now see it this actually occurs in my own life quite often and I don't even realize it until now. Words only capture some of the reality your trying to express to another person. Your true meaning of what you're trying to say/express is behind all of the words now that I think of it. At points in your life will probably come across a time where you can't put together the right words to say because there is a million words flowing through your mind. Sometimes you can't put it into words, but what you can do is show physical expressions like smiling or frowning even the way the tone of your voice is affects what your saying. I love how this quote puts together the simplest of words to make the quote that relates to us the most.

Theresa Petrone has clearly stated from the article that she is a big fan of fundraising and is into the whole idea of raising a money for certain causes... As forth she claimed "in order to raise money for American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, a team of my coworkers planned a Pancake Breakfast for all the employees". This particular fundraiser was a great idea to spread awareness across her area about Breast Cancer. The whole fundraiser seemed to of had a great positive vibe to it coming from  I walked into the room and was immediately handed a heaping pile of pink pancakes (swear to God they were pink!), my coffee and a “thank you for coming!”. For the most part the whole idea was a great thought and very relevant to whats going on in the world right now with this particular issue but, there was a couple things that I also didn't enjoy about this blog. Petrone makes her mood sounding like it was a drag to actually come and support her fellow workers as claimed  "I loved the idea but when my alarm clock went off an hour earlier that morning I wasn’t exactly thrilled to be jumping out of bed. Regardless, I managed to only hit the snooze button once and still made it on time". To me I just thought she could of been more considerate with how serious the cause was and didn't have to make it into a out of the way type of mood to go.

http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Expert-witness-says-ricketts-caused-baby-s-broken-2202210.php

My article was about mainly a court trial held for fourth month old Ina Jane McEhleny. A witness claimed that the 18 fractures that were found in the baby were from her father. I really couldn't believe what I read when I saw that this baby could of actually been that brutally abused and yet professional help might of found the real cause. "Dr. Patrick D. Barnes a pediatric radiologist from Palo Alto, Calif., said that the 18 fractures found on the baby post-mortem happened because the child was vitamin D deficient in the womb and shortly after birth, causing brittle bones." And yet again the court attorney Elizabeth Kennedy testified that having all those broken bones during birth rarely ever occurs. Barnes claimed that her statement was false because "the doctors don't want to get sued".

Her father now is faced with "Man slaughter, murder, assault and endangering charges". The defense side of the court was put through a scare just Tuesday morning when Barnes claimed he was done with the trial because he had another case he was assigned to. The county judge threatened Barnes with not paying him and that they would "sanction his office". Soon after Barnes chose to come back and make another meeting for the court.

  1. Is the doctor really benefiting this trial or making is worse?
  2. Is the child now dead and when did if so did it pass away?
  3. What is going to happen to Barnes if he looses the trial?
  4. Will the doctor be found not determining that the baby had such severe birth affects?

Skinny models are setting a bad example for teenagers

I agree with this statement in every way possible for various reasons. I think that thin models are setting out that in order to be pretty and good enough you must be a size 1 or 0 with perfect body. In our society that's what they are making "Beautiful" and or attractive out to be. I think it puts such a negative impact on teenagers because seeing those small itty bitty bodies puts the mind set in us that we should be looking like the models. I think they should at least stop exposing the skinny models on the commercials, television shows and magazines for a good start and then put average size girls on guys on their to show people come in all different shapes and sizes. I feel it would start boosting a lot more self esteem in teen boys and girls knowing that they don't have to be such a small size to be considered beautiful.

How to break my heart

How to break my heart
you can start by saying those
three simple words and one
day decide your heart has moved on
without mine

How to break my heart
by pulling me in with your
sweet smile and loving eyes
making my heart skip beats
but yours running the other way

How to break my heart
hearing you say those same
deep "I need you" words
to her and feeling your memory
erase me all at once

How to break my heart
is when I fall asleep with you
running through my mind
and waking up the next day
realizing it was all a dream

20 things that annoy me

  1. When people chew with their mouth open
  2. When someone doesn't straighten the back of their hair right
  3. People who judge another person without even knowing them
  4. People who are very conceited
  5. When I have to repeat myself 20 times
  6. When my mom asks me a million questions about something
  7. Stepping in dog poo out side in my backyard
  8. Computer's being extremely slow
  9. My siblings
  10. People that are really obnoxious in the morning or in general
  11. Breaking out on my face
  12. People who walk really slow in the hall way
  13. Nosey people
  14. People who smell
  15. People who cough and don't cover their mouths
  16. Running into something and hitting your hip on it
  17. People who over use the word "like"
  18. When people stare at you for a long time
  19. Sweating in general
  20. When my mom or anyone doesn't have their phone on when I really need to get a hold of them
I think one of the most annoy-ingest things is when (my mom especially) doesn't have her phone when I need to get a hold of her for an important reason. There has been various occasions where I really needed to get a hold of my mom and she just doesn't answer it. For a great example just last week when I had a pounding headache and I felt on the verge of throwing up my mom of course didn't answer her phone for a solid 25 minutes. When she did finally call me back she acted as if it was totally okay that I was feeling as if I was dieing in the nurses office. On top of her not picking up her phone she was late picking me up. That I must say is one of the most annoy-ingest things someone can ever do to me.

Web Gallery of Art

When I was growing up before my Grandparents moved to Sandiago my family and I would go on these little trips to my grandparents house. They lived near Poughkippsee, Ny so it was a kind of a drive. When we arrived at their house I would always see these beautiful rose bushes blooming. I would love to go outside and look at them all for the longest time. They had yellow, pink and red roses growing in the bushes. Whenever I see roses it always reminds me of the big colorful rose bushes my grandparents have. I can't wait for when I'm older because in my yard I want to have those vibrant flowers in my garden too.

A new voyage will fill your life with untold memories

When I got fortune in class I looked at it and went absolutely blank. I thought about it for a long time and then it hit me. I then noticed right away that this point in my life is a new voyage all its self. Going into tenth grade and starting a new chapter in my life is going to have all new memories along the way. I feel like life itself is a new voyage because you experience something new living each day. This fortune made me realize that I have a lot of time ahead of me to make all these untold memories and I can’t wait to experience them when they actually happen. With going into tenth grade I have a lot more opportunities to start a new voyage then I did last year as a fresh men.  I think this should motivate me into starting more sports and making a lot more new friends by joining the sports.

The letter M

Mosquito's are the most disgusting and pointless bug that was ever created. Most of the time when ever one gets in my house it seems like they never die. Mosquito's make this obnoxious loud buzzing noise and fly around you.  Many times you end up with these itchy spots on your skin that are non- stop itching. Malaria is a a very deadly disease caused my female mosquito's. Malaria is mainly found in people in Africa and is most of the time not treated.

In iridescent dreams

In iridescent dreams and
milk-white memories
I still saw me and you
hand in hand

In iridescent dreams
lets us see the great future
and how everything turned out
for us even for the better and the worse

In iridescent dreams
holds a great place where
all of your greatest wishes
finally come true

In iridescent dreams
shows me all the amazing
times we used to have,
but when I think about it
that's why they call it
iridescent dreams
