What is first degree murder? How do you get charged with two counts of the same thing?

The times and union article I red was about a young mother getting charged and arrested with the murder of her two twin baby girls. The two babies were finally found in the trunk of her car in Iowa dead. The police and detectives did firther research on the mother and found out she never even gave birth to the children at a hospital she gave birth to them in her own house? I thought that was really strange and not something you hear about daily. Later on to find the kids bodies left in the trunk at the home of Jackie Burkle. Jackie was arrested finally and she was charged with first degree murder. I learned that first degree murder is defined as the murder was "planned or thought out and willfully". Basically the killing was not on accident and the person had every clue in thier mind of what they were doing when they were committing the crime. So learning the main idea of what first degree murder was I'm guessing the mother of these two children had planned out in her mind that she had a long term plan of killing them and disposing thier bodies not expecting to get caught, maybe that's why she gave birth to them in her own home and not in a hospital where they could keep records and other health things of her children?
